Initially, I'm with you on that being a fail (Like he said in the article, kids need some stability to look up to). But, I read more into what this is about. It's actually gonna start with a video game called Epic Mickey. This article explains it. www.gamesradar.com/wii/disney-epic-mickey/preview/the-11-things-you-need-to-know-about-epic-mickey/a-200910291215659086/g-2009102811119630063Basically, he CAN be "badass", but he can also be helpful and constructive, depending on the player's decisions. It seems like a creative premise and an open-ended game with a lot of freedom, which encourages creativity and dynamic problem-solving. The character becomes relateable because he basically becomes what the player makes him. That does seem to make him lose the identity of a character in and of himself, but in exchange kids who play will see Mickey as a dynamic being who has a lot of power, and can do a lot with it. Rather than the quiet sidelines type he's become. He actually used to be quite dynamic and mischievous in the old black-and-white cartoons. This would basically bring back what he used to be. I'm mixed on that of course; we have plenty of mischievous characters and more are always on the horizon. But like this article points out, Mickey has become an icon and not much else, a symbol of a corporation. This would make him a personality again. The trick is, what will be done with him when the dust settles? Which "side" of Mickey will become the chosen personality to the new image? Since the game doesn't have any one single outcome in that regard, it's hard to say. Maybe they'll wait and see which "side" the players end up choosing the most. I dunno. Whoever wrote him into Kingdom Hearts had done a good job, I thought, of keeping his current lawful-goodness with a side of badass. He wore a dark cloak, and fought battles, but still had something quiet and noble about him without it being angsty. I kinda liked that image, and if anything that would be a nice alternative. He was still who he is, just with a little more punch. Looks like they're going for more spunk and energy with this version, though. Which yeah, can be good in a way... but I dunno. I'm mixed on this too. I just see that it probably won't be as bad as many worry it'll be. But I'm not entirely comfy with it either. I guess we'll see what the future holds. But the fact that it's starting with a flexible game, where his personality depends on the player, will make whatever transition happens easier, for better or worse.

If they make him have an iphone and is "down with the texting generation" and make him a "urban hipster" then disney is doomed.
