No One Like Her
by: Sheng Xiong
Lucas: "So... What are you trying to say?"
Harley: "Simple, things are easier now."
Lucas: "But I don't understand, how things have come to this... Please, why is it like this?"
Harley: "I didn't make it this way, human nature has... Don't blame yourself- it has nothing to do with you."
Lucas: "But why? Why are you still here then?"
Harley: "I can't explain things now... It's... complicated-"
His eyes suddenly open & his breath heavy in his throat. Fiercely, his heart pounds from within his chest as he whimpers softly to himself.
Lucas: "Why... Why did you have to go?"
He slowly raises himself from his bed & staggers to his bathroom. Not a sound echos through his apartment. Staring himself in the mirror, all he sees is her. His own face reminds him of her. Grunting in frustration, he quickly begins to wash his face aggressively, as if to wash the memories down the drain. Looking back up into his reflection, her face flashes back into his mind- he won't ever forget her.
~~~~
Walking along, he makes no haste to his destination. Most of his days are brighter now, it's been a year since she's gone. Yet now all the sudden he has these dreams of her that seem to haunt him, though he doesn't mind it much being able to see her again. He wonders if she's really there in his dreams or if they're simply just dreams. He looks on into the crowd & looks upon the many faces. Young, old, men, women, but no one in the world like her- no one remotely comparable. He has learned how to live stronger & wiser thanks to her, but he wonders still- why in his dreams now? Making his way, he seats himself on a bench in a park not too far from his apartment complex. Taking in a deep breath, he can smell the memories & hear the soft wind. He slowly closes his eyes.
Harley: "You remembered."
She stands behind him with her head held high in the gentle breeze.
Lucas: "How could I forget?"
Harley: "Well, it's been a while, & you were pretty upset at the time."
He smiles.
Lucas: "Don't start with me."
Harley bends down & wraps her arms around him.
Harley: "Did you know, I can hear your thoughts."
Lucas: "Then what was I thinking that day?"
Harley: "You wish it was you & not me."
His head lowers.
Harley: "But as I can see it now, you've been able to forgive yourself, which I'm happy to know."
Lucas: "You still haven't told me."
She loosens her hold & begins to walk away.
Lucas: "Stop."
He stands up firmly & turns to her.
Lucas: "Why won't you tell me? It hurts me to see you this way. I- ... I miss you."
She turns to him & smiles faintly.
Harley: "I can't... Not just yet. I must know first."
Lucas: "What is it? I'll tell you, just tell me whatever it is, I'll say it."
Harley: "You don't need to tell me, I know your thoughts- not from you."
Lucas: "From who then, I'll ask them- "
Harley: "Lucas."
They stare on in despair.
Harley: "Soon, my friend."
She walks away & he tries to reach out for her.
His eyes flutter open to find himself still seated at the park bench. The spring breeze still gentle & the many faces still passing by. Yet still, no one around is like her.
~~~~
Standing outside, he's in a different mood of thinking, more positive & outgoing. Looking several times at his watch, he waits for her. Here she comes. Her straight, medium-length hair bobs at her neck & her figure narrow. He calls out to her.
Lucas: "Cheryl!"
He waves her down & she turns with a big smile. She hurries to him & they embrace for a moment.
Cheryl: "I'm so glad you could make it! Sorry I'm a little late."
He shakes his head.
Lucas: "No, it's alright."
She combs her hair behind her ear & giggles to herself, but in a way to cause him to smile. They continue with their evening as she obviously makes flirtatious advances. He enjoys the attention, but still worries in the back of his mind. As the evening progresses, they both become slightly intoxicated & decide to take a break. She excuses herself to the restroom as he easily sobers himself.
Harley: "Bad idea."
He flinches in his seat to find Harley standing at his side.
Lucas: "Wh- What are you doing here? Right now?"
Harley: "You should go home, you're tired."
Cheryl: "Lucas?"
He jumps from his slumber & looks up to Cheryl.
Lucas: "What?"
Cheryl: "Um, I think you might have fallen asleep!"
Lucas: "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't- "
Cheryl: "It's okay..."
She gazes at him & grins.
Cheryl: "Let's get outta here."
Fully sobered on arrival, the two enter her apartment in anxiousness. She fetches two glasses filled with sweet juice & they make themselves comfortable on the couch. They have light conversation until a silence ensues. She tips her head to the side & she smiles at him. He looks her over & nods.
Lucas: "I had a lot of fun tonight."
Cheryl: "Me too."
She slowly leans in & pauses. He doesn't move. She moves in closer. He's still. She presses her lips softly against his & they begin to kiss. A rush flows through both of them as they continue. With his eyes closed, he briefly forgets about Harley & takes Cheryl into his arms & rests her on her back. He wants to be loved. He wants someone to know & to be there for him. He won't go on feeling like he can't. Suddenly, but faintly, a scream defines itself from within his mind. He ignores it. The screams are muffled, but are making their way through. He tries to listen. It screams out to him, calling out his name in horrible pain. He recognizes it. He jumps back from Cheryl & holds his head tightly. Cheryl goes to his aid, but he doesn't hear her. The screams become louder as it nearly becomes unbearable- it stops. He catches his breath & the ringing in his ears fade. He calms Cheryl down & exclaims he's all right. His cell phone suddenly buzzes in his pocket. He quickly retrieves it while apologizing to Cheryl & answers it.
Lucas: "Hello?"
"Hi, I need to talk with you. It's about my daughter, Harley."
Lucas: "Oh, all right. When would you like to see me?"
"Tomorrow afternoon, I'll be with my wife at the park."
Lucas: "Sure, Mr. Dagget, I'll see you then."
He makes his way to the door & endlessly apologizes to Cheryl. She shakes her head & smiles. He departs & hurries home as the pain in his head subsides. Slumping into his bed, he hopes for the first time not to see Harley tonight. Not after hearing her scream out to him.
~~~~
The day began like every other day, but for the first time he had gotten what he hoped for, Harley was no where to be found. So many unanswered questions ran through his mind. He wanted to see her, yet he was fearful. Stepping out the door, he wished he had never hoped to not see her, he wanted to know & he wanted to know now. He wanted to see her more than anything, more than ever before. He hurries & arrives on time, but finds the park bench unoccupied. Taking a breath, he slowly turns to see the many faces passing by. Young, old, men, women, but-
Lucas: "Wait. ...Wait! That face... I know that face!"
Here she comes. Her long black hair flows as she walks forth from the crowd & her curves speak for themselves. She approaches him close enough that her hair brushes his cheek.
Lucas: "I- It can't be! H- How?"
Harley: "Magic."
Lucas: "I'm dreaming... I'm only dreaming... Am I?"
Harley: "Depends if you've forgotten me."
Lucas: "Of course not! This is cruel, I can't be dreaming!"
Harley: "You did... I know your thoughts & you forgot... You forgot about me..."
Lucas: "I- I don't understand, why are you so upset with me? We told each other everything. We were best friends!"
Harley: "Lucas... I wanted to die..."
Lucas: "What? What are you talking about?"
Harley: "Laying in that hospital bed, nearly dead... In that coma- I just wanted it to end."
Lucas: "No! How could you do that, leave me behind?"
Harley: "That's just it! I couldn't! I wanted to die, but somehow I just snapped out of it! All there was when I woke was the agonizing pain! There was so much pain... My mother & father told me I had screamed out for you. They were so scared. But I know now- why I wanted to stay, why I've been able to see you in your dreams- "
Lucas: "This is sick, stop it. I have to wake up, just stop it!"
Harley: "Lucas!- "
Harley: "I can't lose you again!"
She takes him into her arms & kisses him instantly. Deep, yet soft, a sensation he had never felt before. He's fallen in love with her. Finally, he realizes her feelings has reached far from friendship even in near death. To turn away from death to announce herself to him he can't help but to hold on tighter to her. They softly seal a kiss & she stares into his eyes. Tears begin to fall from her eyes as she trembles to speak.
Harley: "I love you, Lucas. I can't go on without you."
Tears begin to stream from his eyes & he takes her into his arms tightly.
Lucas: "I love you too, Harley. I love you so damn much."
The spring breeze gently brushes their skin & the many faces still pass by. Still, no one around is comparable to her.
