Can yall point me in the right direction?

I'm looking for an Anime that has a very gritty atmosphere. Something where not only the people are characters, but the environment itself. I'm looking for either a Filme Noire type feel to it, or a Cyber Punk in the tradition of Neuromancer or Snow Crash type setting. The ones I'm considering ATM are Akira, and the original Bubblegum Crisis series, but they don't quite have the dark, atmospheric feel to them that I want. Something like Sin City might be a good more modern reference point for those who don't read nerdy SF.
