So essentially, as far as I understand, crono and I are going to Geek kon in a very short time from now (it's August 23-25). Unless we just skip the idea and consider it a donation.
I also understand the financial difficulties and the lack of ambition, need, or desire to attend such things. Please tell me if I'm wrong. If your heart was really set on going, you would find a way to make it happen. (If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything). THIS IS NOT A GUILT TRIP! I am saying I understand. The value proposition (what do you gain) for what is being asked for monetarily and time-wise just isn't there. I get it.
Furthermore, I understand my own lack of enthusiasm towards what is increasingly becoming a very compartmentalized fandom. Lately there aren't any(?) series with broad general appeal. I think Gurren Lagann (2007) was probably the last real sort of mass market product. Haruhi was in there a little bit earlier or later. I know of Soul Eater but even that's 2009-ish.
At this point is where you must pay significant extra money for a TV channel or streaming series, it creates the haves and the have-nots. Nothing really broadcast free of additional charge anymore. Most you guys don't even have cable TV anymore (sign of the times). There's no push in a specific direction with the ability to pick and stream from a specific list of whatever, whenever.
Freedom of Choice (of a subset of mostly crap) versus Freedom from Choice (of something half-decent that everyone tunes in for).
No cartoon network / fox kids to really popularize anything with half of a soul. Too much saturation. Too many people going in too many different directions. The smoke is rising from the burnout of all the zombie / ghost hunter series.
So it's hard to know WHAT to be excited about from Japan. Hey Japan, your videogames basically suck now. www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-03-07-fez-creator-phil-fish-declares-modern-japanese-games-just-suck
Yes I like Regular Show and Adventure Time. But hey, it's not Anime. It's US TV typical episodic type comedy and light storytelling (no plot arcs, no character growth). For example, Finn will always have feelings of attraction for the Flame Princess, Mortecai will never actually lose his job past one episode.
