I hate Firefox now.

So yesterday was going perfectly normal. I was browsing the internet just fine. I didn't download anything. I didn't install anything. But for some reason or another, Firefox started acting up.

You know how when you have multiple tabs open, and when you try to close the browser it asks you if you want to close ALL tabs? Well, Firefox started trying to close my browser upon each attempt to close tabs. This was pretty annoying but didn't pose a problem until I actually closed my browser. Then it started closing Firefox the MOMENT I tried to open it. Open and close within a span of 1 second. All you see is a flash of the browser disappearing.

I went to my Program Files and located my Mozilla Firefox folder. But as soon as I double-clicked on it, that window closed automatically too.

I started scouring the internet for a solution. I tried opening Firefox in Safe Mode (with no success). I tried a System Restore, but that seemed to have made the problem worse: Firefox wouldn't even TRY to open at all after that. I uninstalled (I had to start my computer in Safe Mode to do this, because IT WOULDN'T UNINSTALL IN NORMAL MODE), deleted ALL files associated with Firefox (except a list of bookmarks), and reinstalled. Nothing. I tried installing an older version of Firefox (2.0 something). The browser opened once, then reverted to the problem of closing automatically (a small step up from not even opening at all, but still not helpful).

I'm about to the point where I want to throw my laptop out the window Anyone got a solution?

Maybe try system restoring to about a week ago, THEN try reverting to Firefox 2?

On a personal note: I'm considering going back to Firefox 2.0 as well, I havent been impressed with Firefox 3 what so ever.

i'd backup your bookmarks and just reinstall firefox. programs go crazy for all sorts of reasons. reinstalling usually fixes it since it brings it back to a stable state.

Here's my spew:

FF basically made me install tab mix plus, because for some reason the tab opening (open in new tab) would open a 2nd blank tab right after the new "opened" tab with a link and the (new) tab would open at the end of the other tabs, creating alot of un-needed blank tabs every time I would open a link in new tab. tabmix plus fixed this but I cannot scroll fast through my tab list and have to use the tab list (very slow and sometimes crashes FF).....

second is the ram usage. I have only 15 tabs open and it is taking up 350MB right now and the reserve in vista process monitor manager is 712MB! FF should be able to handle 30+ and take up only 100MB tops. I have 30 IE tabs open (oblivion stuff) and IE is taking up 25MB!!! there is no way FF needs to take up this much, eather it is not compressing the space it uses for cache or soemthing. Or it saves a copy of each tab for the level of "undo closed tabs". people are speculating is does this to mave max undo level but there is no way to change the amount of undo levels. This is why most sane programs have undo levels and are changeable. However I keep my set of 10-15 open and rarely open new ones. I thougt that leaving them open would make it use less becuase it does not have to store undo levels in cache just current pages, no copies..... someone needs to elab on this.....

it most likely is gonna center around flash, however I am tired of beating that dead horse around, time to put flash to the grave.... something better and leaner needs to arise.

Also another gripe is scripts..... if it finds a script that is error prone instead of doing the smart thing and prompting you to "abort, retry,fail" with a bad script, it crashes. it does this on youtube all the time as well as most "2.0" sites. it's gotten so bad I have a noscript extension I have on the ready. ....
