Early note : I know this is more appropriate in the Games & Media section, however given the nature of this topic it seems alot more appropriate for the general DZX forum.
Its been pointed out over the course of a few years by a few of the DZX locals (Sqiky, Sithius, etc) that our little core of people have alot of the basic requirements for getting into video game programming.
We've got programmers, networkers, artistically inclined people, even a person who's going in for a film/writing degree. Not to mention a slew of gamers who would be our relentless beta testers *cough*whicker and redwolf*cough*.
I know it can eventually become an investment as well as a dedication, but if we start off with some very basic easy projects we could make something like this work. So I hope I'm not the only person who's still giving this a good deal of thought, and if anyone has input into this topic please post here. This would be a good place to establish a foundation of things, which programming platforms we could use, programs for designing games, so on and so on.

I (heart) programming... Need any reports done with COBOL?
We've tossed this idea around for quite a while before. Most of us have business programming skills... but I'm guessing we could adapt/mutate our skills.
Whatcha (anybody) got in mind?

I think we should make a full real time battle system 3D PLRPG game.....
Just kidding.
I dunno what we could use as starting software, perhaps thats something we could all look into and post links to information here.
But in regards to an actual project perhaps we could look into making a very basic project just to get our feet wet, a recreation of a classic like Tetris or Mario or something old school. And whilst doing something like this, we could also be researching into more advanced software?

Ive been looking into java lately, and the jmonkey 3d java engine. Its got a lot of good features and is easy to use. Regardless of whatever you decide to use, this is what I will be using for my projects. Oh, and it even has a physics engine add on if you want it. Anyway I have gone threw a lot of the toturials and it seems quite straight forward even for a newbie programmer like myself. The site also has demos, screenshots, videos, and a forum. There is even some good user submitted programs in the forums such as a procedurial planet generator.

i've been messing around with flash and making a basic platformer engine. still pretty early, but you can jump a ball onto a box.

if we're all gonna make a game, flash would be the place to start. its simple and easy. it can be limiting but that's probably a good thing for starting out. people wont get overwhelmed.

As discussed a little bit with X, I am looking into C# for some early projects. I'll follow the several book examples and see what I can make from it.
Updates will come after they are made and look promising...
I will unsticky this thread unless there are any objections or many updates from forum members.

Have you tried Microsoft XNA? I actually was going to look into that and install it on my desktop PC. However for some pointless reason the XNA installer forces you to install it onto the C:/ drive on your computer... and considering my C:/ drive is a 10GB partition specifically for my OS that doesnt work to well. I might install it either on my laptop or eventually reformat my main hard drive on my PC to make more room for my OS partition. Defragging a C:/ drive thats 80% full with my OS alone isnt easy.
