 My writing style...?
« Thread Started on Nov 6, 2009, 1:11pm »

As some of you may know, my whole goal with my current story arc for my character is to get him to a place where he is capable of interacting with the other characters in the RPG. (because lets face it, that's a lot more fun than just writing novels) This means moving him through a series of long and trecherous circumstances, because Jack can't fly, teleport, or instantly recover from injuries. He has to deal with travel and physical limitations in many of the same ways normal people do, which means that if I just skipped over a whole ton of stuff and leave time gaps in my story, it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. (considering the one thing we've been trying to establish for the whole RPG is consistancy, that's why we have the Wiki)

But... this also means that my posts, and story in general, has become long... and well... I believe that only TWO people have actually read my latest post so far. I've had another new post on the back burner for a little while now, but I've sorta wanted to give everyone a chance to catch up, so they knew what was going on in my story.

The last thing I wanted to do was make my post so long that its essentially unreadable. >.< I tried really, really hard to pour as much action, excitement, thrills, and explosions in that post and make it as entertaining and fun to read as possible. But now I feel like I've shot myself in the foot, because what could have been an awesome post in now just intimidating to most people due to it's legnth...

So... if you guys really wanted I could go back, delete that post, and just do a quick fast-forward and get straight to the end of my story arc, roughly explaining everything that happened to me along the way (although I think you'd find it much more entertaining to actually read). I guarantee you all though, that none of my posts I had planned on making in the future will be nearly as long as that last one.

Dude, no deleting, it was really good stuff!

You can just do what I suggested before: Post in sections.

Action sequence, new post, new action sequence. It's simple. ;)

We've skipped a lot of good potential parts before... not all willingly, mind you... >_> But yeah, I woulda rather developed my character more in a neutral setting when those were available (such as when we were all vacationing on the Beta Continent for a while), but some folks were in a big fat hurry so I had to go with it.

Right now though, you're free to go at your own pace. You can skip and summarize parts too. Very easily. But that doesn't mean destroy what's already written.

Unless you've already started on it, boat trips are very easy to write as "Jack got off the boat and stretched; it had been a long and boring trip." Or, can have valuable exposition and thinking during one small part of the trip ("Jack saw something that reminded him of a donut, (insert a buncha donut-related flashbacks and philosophies, lol)"), with the rest summed up as "The night then passed." and whatnot. Or can even suddenly have Jack nearly at his goal after the ship has already come aground, with a little "It felt good to move his muscles after such-n-such time cooped up in the belly of the boat. But now he had bigger fish to fry. Mmmm....fish...."

You don't hafta get rid of anything. It's just a matter of picking what you add.

And like I said, you can keep ALL the content, just consider making the posts themselves shorter in length. We all enjoy a nice juicy steak, but some of us like to cut it into pieces before we eat it. But we still end up eating the whole steak. Ya dig? ;)

I was gonna have a big response to this, but honestly ZC said everything I would have said :P

One thing I learned near the tail end of the Element of Prosperity saga was that big long posts, while epic, can sorta scare off readers a bit and not to mention slow things down a bit. Thus I've been trying to shorten things up myself and be more frequent with posts.

...Also, BE ON YAHOO MORE :-/

Kefka is the kind of villain you'd see in a Michael Bay movie
